The Zone 6 executive board met one hour prior to the April 25 Garden Club meeting, to award the grants received for 2011. Applications to request funding were to be submitted by February 28, 2011. Nine applications were received.
The funding advisory committee received the following applications: Chicopee Foundation $250; Crestwood and Oakcrest Neighborhoods $250; Elm Acres $250; Friends of SEK Recycling $250; Pittsburg Beautiful $250; Pittsburg Butterfly Library Garden $200; Pittsburg Community Garden $250; PSU HHRP/Pittsburg Parks and Recreation $50; Stilwell Foundation $250.
Bill Askew made a motion to award funding to all applicants; second by Maxine Conrad. The board voted unanimously to award all the grants. The recipients of the grants will be asked to send the club “before and after” snapshots of their projects. These pictures will be placed in
the club scrapbook.
Board members present were: Kristie Watson Bell, Maxine Conrad, Norma Gilmore, Steven Hellwig, Bill and Bobbie Askew, Opal Trites, Janice Evans, and Kathy Fox.
The regular meeting opened with refreshments being served to 20 members and guest Nanette Krumsick. Hostesses were Opal Trites, Janice Evans, and Kathy Fox.
$625 has been received in memory of Christine Scott. This money will be used to buy a statue to be placed in the butterfly garden at the library. Maxine Conrad and Sharon Star were to explore the price range of statues at Sandstone Gardens and will report at the May meeting.
Bobbie Askew, program chair, asked for ideas for a field trip. She also announced upcoming programs.
Opal Trites gave a demonstration on how to plant a terrarium. She said to choose a nice clean, clear glass container with or without a lid. Put pebbles in the bottom, add activated charcoal, then add good potting soil. Fill with suitable small houseplants. Opal showed the beautiful terrarium that she had planted.
